Animal Wellness Action and the Center for a Humane Economy seek an experienced email fundraising and advocacy specialist to develop high-performing email campaigns, lifecycle messaging, and conversion-focused copy that inspires supporters to donate, advocate, and remain engaged over time.

This consultant will serve as the organization’s lead strategist for email fundraising and advocacy messaging, developing persuasive communications across the supporter lifecycle while working closely with internal communications staff and the CRM & Audience Growth Strategist to maximize engagement, revenue, and advocacy participation.

The ideal candidate possesses a strong understanding of nonprofit fundraising psychology, direct response copywriting, donor stewardship, and digital advocacy, with a proven record of producing campaigns that generate measurable results.

PROJECT SCOPE

The consultant should be prepared to perform some or all of the following:

Lifecycle Email Strategy

  1. Develop messaging for automated supporter journeys, including welcome series, donor onboarding, monthly sustainer stewardship, lapsed donor reactivation, and other lifecycle communications.
  2. Recommend improvements to supporter communications based on engagement and fundraising performance.
  3. Collaborate on the ongoing refinement of donor and supporter journeys.

Email Fundraising

  1. Develop compelling fundraising email campaigns supporting emergency appeals, matching gift opportunities, recurring giving, major organizational initiatives, and year-end fundraising.
  2. Write persuasive fundraising copy grounded in direct-response best practices.
  3. Recommend campaign sequencing, messaging cadence, and testing strategies to improve results.

Advocacy Campaigns

  1. Develop action alert email sequences supporting federal and state legislative priorities, corporate campaigns, regulatory initiatives, and grassroots advocacy.
  2. Create multi-email advocacy campaigns designed to maximize petition signatures, legislator contacts, public comments, and other advocacy actions.
  3. Write persuasive copy that motivates supporters to take meaningful action.

Campaign Messaging

  1. Develop integrated messaging frameworks supporting organizational campaigns across multiple communications channels.
  2. Ensure consistency of voice and messaging across Animal Wellness Action and the Center for a Humane Economy.
  3. Translate complex policy issues into compelling, accessible communications.

Conversion Copywriting

  1. Write high-converting copy for donation pages, advocacy landing pages, website content, email signup pages, and other digital assets.
  2. Develop calls to action that maximize engagement, fundraising, and supporter participation.
  3. Recommend copy improvements based on campaign performance and audience behavior.

Communications Support

  1. Provide copywriting support for organizational communications as requested.
  2. Assist with campaign messaging, digital communications, and other fundraising or advocacy initiatives.
  3. Collaborate with communications, digital, fundraising, and policy staff to support organizational priorities.

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Demonstrated success writing nonprofit fundraising emails that generate significant revenue.
  2. Extensive experience developing advocacy campaigns and action alerts for mission-driven organizations.
  3. Strong understanding of donor psychology, direct-response fundraising, and digital engagement.
  4. Exceptional long-form and short-form copywriting skills.
  5. Experience writing lifecycle email series, donor stewardship communications, and automated campaigns.
  6. Knowledge of email marketing best practices, testing methodologies, and performance optimization.
  7. Ability to translate complex public policy issues into persuasive communications.
  8. Excellent project management skills and ability to manage multiple simultaneous priorities.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

  1. Five or more years of nonprofit fundraising communications experience, with a strong preference for work in animal-welfare advocacy.
  2. Experience with EveryAction or comparable nonprofit CRM and email platforms.
  3. Background in animal protection, public policy, advocacy, or issue-based campaigning.
  4. Experience collaborating with CRM, marketing automation, or digital strategy teams.
  5. Familiarity with SEO, landing page optimization, and digital fundraising best practices.

CONSULTANT DELIVERABLES

The consultant’s success will be measured by progress toward:

  1. Increased email fundraising revenue.
  2. Improved donor acquisition, retention, and reactivation.
  3. Growth in monthly sustainer participation.
  4. Increased advocacy participation and action completion.
  5. Improved email engagement metrics, including open rates, click-through rates, and conversions.
  6. Development of effective automated lifecycle communications.
  7. Delivery of compelling, persuasive copy aligned with organizational priorities.
  8. Consistent, high-quality messaging across fundraising and advocacy campaigns.
