Candidate’s record shows potential to become a national leader on animal welfare
Washington, D.C. — Animal Wellness Action, a national policy and political organization seeking to enhance and advance legal protections for animals, has endorsed John Mannion in the race for New York’s 22nd congressional district.
The group lauded his work in the New York State Senate to enact strict penalties for animal cruelty, increase funding for animal shelters, strengthen the state’s law against animal fighting, stop the pipeline into puppy mills, and prohibit insurance companies from discriminating against different breeds of animals. The candidate also won praise for helping to pass legislation last year to end inhumane contest hunts in which foxes, coyotes, bobcats, racoons, and other species were hunted and killed for cash and prizes.
“John Mannion has a real chance to become one of Congress’s leaders on animal welfare issues,” said Wayne Pacelle, president of Animal Wellness Action. “He has stood up for anti-cruelty policies in the New York State Senate, and I hope voters send him to Congress so he can build on that record at the federal level.”
