Congresswoman deserves support for steadfast leadership on numerous animal welfare issues.
Washington D.C. — Animal Wellness Action, a national policy and political organization seeking to enhance and advance legal protections for animals, has endorsed Andrea Salinas for re-election in the race for Oregon’s 6th congressional district.
The group lauded her leadership on numerous animal welfare issues, including being the lead Democratic co-sponsor of the FIGHT Act (H.R. 2742), aimed at cracking down on illegal dogfighting and cockfighting. The FIGHT Act strengthens enforcement under the Animal Welfare Act, and it has earned the endorsement of the Oregon Sheriffs’ Association as well as more than 750 other state, local, and national organizations.
“Rep. Andrea Salinas finds a balance between production agriculture and animal welfare, and she’s one of the lawmakers that can bring us together in the nation on animal care,” said Wayne Pacelle, president of Animal Wellness Action.
Pacelle also highlighted Rep. Salinas’s leadership in signing a congressional letter opposing the Ending Agricultural Trade Suppression (EATS) Act (H.R. 4417), which would federally overturn California’s Proposition 12 and other voter-approved state laws to shield farm animals from extreme confinement and inhumane treatment.
The organization also praised Rep. Salinas for supporting key animal welfare legislation such as the Greyhound Protection Act (H.R. 3894), to phase out domestic greyhound racing, the Save America’s Forgotten Equines (SAFE) Act (H.R. 3475), to end the slaughter and export of horses for human consumption, the Humane Cosmetics Act (H.R. 5399), to end animal testing of cosmetics, the Puppy Protection Act (H.R. 1624) to enhance care standards for breeding dogs, and the Addressing Digestive Distress in the Stomachs of Our Youth (ADD SOY) Act (H.R. 1619), to ease the production burden on dairy cows by giving schoolchildren the option to receive a nutritionally equivalent non-dairy milk in the National School Lunch Program.
Rep. Salinas was also applauded for promoting enforcement of existing federal animal welfare laws including the Animal Welfare Act (AWA), the Horse Protection Act (HPA), and the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act, as well as her support for promoting alternatives to animal testing, providing shelter for domestic violence survivors with pets, and addressing the needs of animals in zoos and other regulated facilities during disasters.
“We urge voters in the 6th congressional district of Oregon to back Rep. Salinas this fall,” Pacelle said.
