Animal Wellness Action Endorses Elissa Slotkin in Michigan U.S. Senate Race

Congresswoman deserves support for steadfast leadership on numerous animal welfare issues.

Washington D.C.— Animal Wellness Action, a national policy and political organization seeking to enhance and advance legal protections for animals, has endorsed Rep. Elissa Slotkin in the race for Michigan’s open U.S. Senate seat being vacated by retiring Senator Debbie Stabenow.

The group lauded her strong advocacy and leadership on numerous animal welfare issues. This term, she co-sponsored the FIGHT Act (H.R. 2742) to address organized animal fighting, the Save America’s Forgotten Equines (SAFE) Act (H.R. 3475) to end horse slaughter for human consumption, and the Prevent All Soring Tactics (PAST) Act (H.R. 3090) to stop the abusive practice of horse soring. She has also supported other crucial legislation including the Horse Protection Act and the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act.

“Elissa Slotkin is one of the leaders on animal welfare in the U.S. Congress,” said Wayne Pacelle, president of Animal Wellness Action. “She understands that cruelty to animals is wrong and that it’s typically bound up with other forms of social violence.”

Pacelle also expressed appreciation for Rep. Slotkin’s support of Goldie’s Act (H.R. 1788) to strengthen U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) enforcement against puppy mill abuses, the Puppy Protection Act (H.R. 1624) to enhance care standards for breeding dogs, Violet’s Law (H.R. 1465), to ensure that animals used in research have the opportunity for adoption, and the Pet Safety and Protection Act (H.R. 208), which would restrict sales of pets to laboratories.

She opposed bills to prematurely delist wolves from the list of federally protected endangered species (H.R. 764) and to bar federal land managers from restricting toxic lead ammunition (H.R. 615), which poisons millions of wild animals a year.  Michigan has had its own painful experiences with lead in Flint.  Michigan is also a range state for wolves, and a decade ago, voters rejected two referendums in overwhelming fashion to establish wolf trophy hunting and commercial trapping programs.

“We urge Michigan voters who care about animal welfare and who abhor animal cruelty to send Rep. Slotkin to U.S. Senate,” Pacelle said.
