Animal Wellness Action Endorses Nanette Diaz Barragán in Race for Re-Election in California’s 44th Congressional District

Congresswoman deserves support for steadfast leadership on numerous animal welfare issues.

Washington D.C. — Animal Wellness Action, a national policy and political organization seeking to enhance and advance legal protections for animals, has endorsed Rep. Nanette Diaz Barragán for re-election in the race for California’s 44th congressional district.

The group lauded her work as the lead Democrat on the FDA Modernization Act 3.0 (H.R. 7248), which aims to reduce animal testing and pave the way for more humane, innovative animal-free approaches to drug development.

The organization also applauded her co-sponsorship of critical animal welfare legislation such as the Greyhound Protection Act (H.R. 3894) to end greyhound racing in the United States, the Save America’s Forgotten Equines (SAFE) Act (H.R. 3475), the Puppy Protection Act (H.R. 1624) to enhance care standards for breeding dogs, the Prevent All Soring Tactics (PAST) Act (H.R. 3090), to stop the abusive practice of horse soring, and Goldie’s Act (H.R. 1788) to strengthen U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) enforcement against puppy mill abuses.

“Nanette Barragán is one of Congress’s most important and determined leaders on animal welfare,” said Wayne Pacelle, president of Animal Wellness Action. “She understands that cruelty to animals is wrong and that it’s often linked to other forms of social violence.”

Pacelle expressed special appreciation that Rep. Barragán co-signed a bipartisan letter from 171 members of Congress expressing opposition to the Ending Agricultural Trade Suppression (EATS) Act (H.R. 4417), which would federally overturn California’s Prop 12 and other voter-approved state laws to shield farm animals from extreme confinement in cramped cages.  He also noted her support of the Pigs In Gestation Stalls (PIGS) Act (H.R. 2939), to ban the extreme confinement of mother pigs.

Barragán was also commended for her co-sponsorship of the Minks in Narrowly Kept Spaces (MINKS) are Superspreaders Act (H.R. 7670), which would address the public health threat posed by domestic farming of minks for their fur, and the Addressing Digestive Distress in the Stomachs of Our Youth (ADD SOY) Act (H.R. 1619), which would ease a burden on dairy cows and ensure that lactose intolerant schoolchildren, many of whom are students of color, can access non-dairy milk alternatives in the National School Lunch Program.

“We urge voters in the 44th congressional district of California to back Rep. Barragán this fall,” Pacelle said.
