Congressman deserves support for being a champion on numerous animal welfare issues.
Washington D.C. — Animal Wellness Action, a national policy and political organization seeking to enhance and advance legal protections for animals, has endorsed Rep. Troy Nehls for re-election in the race for Texas’s 22nd congressional district.
The group lauded him for being the lead Republican co-sponsor of the bipartisan Cease Animal Research Grants Overseas (CARGO) Act (H.R. 4757), which would stop taxpayer funding of inhumane experiments on animals in foreign countries, and for introducing an amendment last year to prevent taxpayer dollars to be used for shooting cattle in National Forests in the Southwest. The amendment, which the organization endorsed, was approved overwhelmingly by a voice vote in the House of Representatives.
“Troy Nehls is one of Congress’s most important and determined leaders on animal welfare,” said Wayne Pacelle, president of Animal Wellness Action. “As a former county sheriff, he understands that cruelty to animals is wrong and that it’s often linked to other forms of lawlessness and social violence.”
Rep. Nehls was also praised for supporting crucial animal welfare legislation including the Fighting Inhumane Gambling and High-Risk Trafficking (FIGHT) Act (H.R. 2742) to address the criminal practices of dogfighting and cockfighting, the Minks in Narrowly Kept Spaces (MINKS) are Superspreaders Act (H.R. 7670) to address the public health threat of domestic mink farming, the Greyhound Protection Act (H.R. 3894) to phase out greyhound racing at U.S. racetracks, the FDA Modernization Act 3.0 (H.R. 7248) to promote alternatives to animal testing in drug development, and the Save America’s Forgotten Equines (SAFE) Act (H.R. 3475) to end the slaughter and export of horses for human consumption.
“We urge all voters who care about animal welfare in the 22nd congressional district of Texas to back Rep. Nehls this fall,” Pacelle said.
