Soaring, Not Suffering

Stopping toxic threats and mass killings to protect America's birds of prey.

We are spearheading a nationwide initiative to safeguard North America’s raptors — eagles, owls, and other birds of prey — and address an array of threats targeting them.

Getting the Lead Out

Through our Getting the Lead Out campaign, we advocate for phasing out lead ammunition and fishing tackle. We’re pushing for federal and state reforms that eliminate lead use in ammunition and fishing tackle because it’s a known toxin that kills raptors and all manner of other wildlife. A landmark continent-wide study published in Science magazine in 2022 revealed that more than half of all bald and golden eagles in North America have acute concentrations of lead in their systems. There is no other explanation for that circumstance but for spent lead dispersed through hunting and fishing activities. Alternative and less toxic forms of ammunition are available and affordable and they match or exceed the performance of lead-based products.

Defending Barred Owls

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is implementing a drastic plan to kill up to 450,000 barred owls over 30 years across the Pacific Northwest—a program that is costly, unworkable, and inhumane. North American natives, barred owls have long been protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Yet the agency has foolishly proceeded with this unprecedented plan to assault North American forest owls. Never has any nation conducted such an immense slaughter of native birds of prey.

The Center for a Humane Economy has filed a lawsuit in federal court and we are rallying lawmakers in Congress to stop the shoot. We’ve also convinced the federal government to halt several barred owl shooting projects.
