Congressman deserves support for advocacy and leadership on numerous animal welfare issues.
Washington D.C. — Animal Wellness Action, a national policy and political organization seeking to enhance and advance legal protections for animals, has endorsed the reelection of Andrew Garbarino in the race for New York’s 2nd Congressional district.
The group lauded his strong advocacy and leadership on numerous animal welfare issues, including co-sponsoring the FIGHT Act, H.R. 2742, to combat animal fighting; the FDA Modernization Act 3.0, to reduce animal testing; H.R. 7248; the Greyhound Protection Act, H.R. 3894, to stop putting dogs at risk for entertainment; and the SAFE Act, H.R. 3475, to halt live exports of horses for slaughter.
“Andrew Garbarino is one of the leaders on animal welfare in the U.S. Congress,” said Wayne Pacelle, president of Animal Wellness Action. “He understands that cruelty to animals is wrong and that it’s typically bound up with other forms of social violence and static thinking.”
Pacelle offered special appreciation for his leadership on a Republicans-only sign-on letter to House Agriculture Committee Chairman G.T. Thompson expressing vigorous opposition to the EATS Act, H.R. 4417. He worked with 15 of his Republican colleagues to issue a letter opposing the EATS Act, arguably the most dangerous and ill-advised farm policy proposal to come before the Congress in U.S. history.
The EATS Act would wipe out important farm animal welfare laws in states, including Prop 12 in California and Question 3 in Massachusetts, which were overwhelmingly adopted by voters.
“A maneuver by some Republicans in Congress to overturn American elections related to farm animal welfare is outrageous and it is driven by Smithfield Foods, which is wholly controlled by the Chinese Communist Party,” added Pacelle. “Congress should not be genuflecting to Beijing’s political leaders and setting the stage for the emergence of high-risk hog factories in our homeland. We are grateful Rep. Garbarino is standing in the way of upending the best forms of American agriculture. We urge voters in the 2nd Congressional District of New York to back Garbarino this fall.”
