Congressman deserves support for commitment on key animal welfare priorities
Washington, D.C. — Animal Wellness Action, a national policy and political organization seeking to enhance and advance legal protections for animals, has endorsed Rep. Buddy Carter for re-election in the race for Georgia’s 1st congressional district.
The group emphasized his leadership this term as the author of the FDA Modernization Act 3.0 (H.R. 7248), a bipartisan measure that builds on a law passed in 2022 to promote animal-free testing in drug development and pave the way for a future of cruelty-free pharmaceuticals.
“As a pharmacist, Buddy Carter understands that every day a drug is being tested on beagles or non-human primates is another day it’s not getting into patients’ medicine cabinets,” said Wayne Pacelle, president of Animal Wellness Action. “An astonishing 90 to 95 percent of drugs never get to market because animal tests are so unreliable. That’s why Congress passed a law in 2022 to make them optional. Rep. Carter’s bill will compel the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to do its job and finally implement that law.”
Pacelle also commended Rep. Carter for signing a letter of opposition to the Ending Agricultural Trade Suppression (EATS) Act (H.R. 4417), which would undermine states’ rights by overturning certain voter-approved state laws governing the humane housing of farm animals. One of the state laws gutted by the EATS Act would be California’s Proposition 12, which passed in a landslide 2018 ballot measure and was later upheld in a U.S. Supreme Court opinion written by Justice Neil Gorsuch, a Trump appointee.
“Animal Wellness Action urges voters in the 1st congressional district of Georgia who care about animal welfare and who abhor animal cruelty to back Rep. Carter this fall,” Pacelle said.
