Congressman deserves support for steadfast leadership on numerous animal welfare issues.
Washington D.C. — Animal Wellness Action, a national policy and political organization seeking to enhance and advance legal protections for animals, has endorsed Jared Huffman for re-election in the race for California’s 2nd congressional district.
The group lauded his strong advocacy and leadership on numerous animal welfare issues. This term, he co-sponsored the Fighting Inhumane Gambling and High-Risk Trafficking (FIGHT) Act, H.R. 2742; the Greyhound Protection Act, H.R. 3894; and the Save America’s Forgotten Equines (SAFE) Act, H.R. 3475. In prior years, he supported important animal welfare legislation that became law, including the Big Cat Public Safety Act and the FDA Modernization Act. He’s been active in efforts to ban mink farming, which is a form of factory farming of wildlife that poses unique zoonotic disease threats to the nation.
“Jared Huffman is one of the leaders on animal welfare in the U.S. Congress, and he’s a leader on wildlife protection and conservation as a senior member of the Natural Resources Committee,” said Wayne Pacelle, president of Animal Wellness Action. “He understands that cruelty to animals is wrong and that it’s typically bound up with other forms of social violence.”
Pacelle expressed special appreciation for Rep. Huffman’s opposition to the Ending Agricultural Trade Suppression (EATS) Act, which would federally overturn certain voter-approved state laws to protect farm animals from extreme confinement, and for his efforts to put an end to U.S. mink farming and the trade in bear gallbladders and bile for traditional Chinese medicine.
Earlier this year, Rep. Huffman also led opposition on the floor of the House to an irresponsible bill brought up by House Republican leaders to weaken the Endangered Species Act protections by prematurely delisting gray wolves in the lower 48 states.
“We urge voters in the 2nd congressional district of California to back Rep. Huffman this fall,” Pacelle said.
