Animal Wellness Action Endorses Nancy Mace in Race for Re-Election in South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District

Congresswoman hailed as a top animal welfare advocate in the U.S. House of Representatives

Washington, D.C. — Animal Wellness Action, a national policy and political organization seeking to enhance and advance legal protections for animals, has endorsed Rep. Nancy Mace for re-election in the race for South Carolina’s 1st congressional district. The organization announced an independent expenditure campaign to show the intensity of its support for the congresswoman.

The group applauded her strong leadership as the author of key legislation including the Minks in Narrowly Kept Spaces (MINKS) are Superspreaders Act (H.R. 7670) to address the public health threat posed by domestic mink farming and the Snowmobiles Aren’t Weapons (SAW) Act (H.R. 9568) to outlaw the use of snowmobiles and other motor vehicles to intentionally kill or maim wildlife on federal lands.  Rep. Mace was also commended for being the lead Republican co-sponsor of the Addressing Digestive Distress in the Stomachs of Our Youth (ADD SOY) Act (H.R. 1619) to ease a production burden on dairy cows and offer children a nutritious non-dairy milk option in the National School Lunch Program.

“Nancy Mace is one of Congress’s most courageous and mission-drive leaders on animal welfare,” said Wayne Pacelle, president of Animal Wellness Action.  “She is a dedicated fighter for mainstream policies to protect both domesticated and wild animals.”

Earlier this year, Rep. Mace showed her commitment to animal protection by voting against a bill (H.R. 764) to strip Endangered Species Act protections for gray wolves across much of the lower 48 states, opening the door to trophy hunting and commercial trapping.  Such a policy might also expose wolves to being recreationally run over with snowmobiles – a practice that came to light earlier this year in Wyoming, and inspired Rep. Mace to introduce the Snowmobiles Aren’t Weapons (SAW) Act.

Pacelle also commended Rep. Mace for co-sponsoring numerous animal welfare bills this term, including the Fighting Inhumane Gambling and High-Risk Trafficking (FIGHT) Act (H.R. 2742) to crack down on organized dogfighting and cockfighting, the FDA Modernization Act 3.0 (H.R. 7248) to promote humane testing in drug development, the Greyhound Protection Act (H.R. 3894) to phase out greyhound racing in the United States, and the Save America’s Forgotten Equines (SAFE) Act (H.R. 3475) to end the slaughter of horses for human consumption.

“We urge voters in the 1st congressional district of South Carolina who care about animal welfare and who abhor animal cruelty to back Rep. Mace this fall,” Pacelle said. “She’s fighting for mainstream anti-cruelty policies and making an impact on local and national policy.”
