Director of Media Relations
The Director of Media Relations is responsible for monitoring, developing, and placing news stories that relate to our advocacy on animal-related issues.

LOCATION: Remote. Location in Eastern Time Zone is preferred; a commitment to working 8 a.m.-5 p.m. ET regardless of location is required
REPORTING: Reports to Senior Director of Communications
JOB SUMMARY
Animal Wellness Action and the Center for a Humane Economy are committed, fast-paced organizations championing the advancement of animal welfare and the end of animal cruelty in government and in business. We are looking for an experienced journalist or PR professional to monitor, develop, and place news stories that relate to our advocacy on animal-related issues. Share of voice and placements will be among the most critical metrics.
DUTIES
- Aggressively monitor news stories of the day for headlines that topically relate to our campaigns and then develop statements for dissemination.
- Work with internal campaign leads and the president of the organizations to formulate news releases.
- Follow up press statements and releases to amplify our share of voice and ensure coverage.
- Set up, conduct, and secure journalist attendance of online press conferences.
- Build relationships with key journalists on animal-welfare topics.
- Seek out and secure interview opportunities for campaign leads in news and magazine articles, radio shows, podcasts, and speaking opportunities.
- Build relationships with social media influencers and bloggers relevant to our topics.
- Serve as a lead in social listening efforts/monitoring of online conversations.
- Work with the senior director of communications to develop a dashboard of metrics and report on them in our monthly measurements meeting.
- Support the communication needs of the president of the organizations and the senior director of communications as necessary.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications or related field with 5-plus years of experience driving and executing communications strategies and tactics.
- Ability to execute and measure multifaceted campaigns and day-to-day communications initiatives.
- Excellent verbal, written, presentation, and problem-solving skills.
- A commitment to fighting animal cruelty and its perpetrators by toughening laws and changing business practices in corporations in the United States and elsewhere.
